Frequently Asked Questions

What is Trint?

A text-based toolkit for transcribing, searching, editing and sharing media content online.

What does it do?

Trint makes it easy to:

  • convert your audio and video files into text
  • polish transcripts to perfect in minutes
  • make your audio and video files searchable
  • put captions on your videos
  • share bite-sized chunks of audio and video online

How does it work?

Trint uses the world’s best automated speech-to-text algorithms to generate accurate transcripts. The easy-to-use Trint Editor glues text to the original audio (and video) so you can search, verify and if necessary correct your transcript without leaving the Trint Editor.

You can export video with captions or embed searchable transcripts on to your site.

Watch a one-minute video on how it works below.

How much does it cost to use Trint?

We have worked hard to keep prices as low as possible: The Pay As You Go price is $15/hr, if you buy monthly it can go down to as low as $12/hr. More info here on our pricing.

Why don’t you offer an “all you can eat” package?

There are real computing costs associated with every minute we transcribe. The Pay As You Go price is $15/hr, if you buy monthly it can go down to as low as $12/hr. Compared to the industry average rate of $100–200 per hour for manual transcription we think this is a bargain!

Who’s behind Trint?

Trint was born in December 2014 when Veteran journalist Jeff Kofman teamed up with developer Mark Boas to transform the way in which we approach transcription. Months of ground-breaking development and experimentation followed resulting in what we have today; a pioneering automated speech recognition tool for audio and video files that allows you to produce transcripts you can actually trust.

How does Trint compare to manual transcription?

Manual transcription is both time-consuming and costly. With reasonable transcription coming in at $100-200 per hour and often taking days to deliver it is an exorbitant process that is outdated given the rapid advancements with modern speech-to-text technology. Trint was setup to address the challenges that have plagued journalists, lawyers, media professionals and the like through enabling users to achieve the same accuracy as manual transcription but much faster and cheaper using Trint’s auto-transcription and verification tools.

Trint quickly gives users the ability to search, verify, correct, edit and export the usable content of recorded speech. Importantly however, Trint is much more than a substitute for manual transcription allowing the user to effortlessly disseminate edited or extracted audio/video/text content to traditional platforms (print, radio, TV) and to online and social media.

Who can use Trint?

Trint is the affordable option that’s available for anyone to use. Our software extends automated speech-to-text to vast new markets and we currently have users in multiple industries including; journalism, media, law, academia and publishing to name just a few.

How long does it take to convert my file to text?

Trint usually converts the uploaded video or audio to text in less time than the length of the file. For example a 45min video interview would typically take less that 45 minutes. That being said a solid internet connection will help deliver the speediest results.

What languages does Trint support?

Trint currently offers language models for British English, North American English, Australian English & European Spanish. Watch this space, we’re set to release more in the near future (this is just the beginning).

How can I get my Team on board?

The benefit of choosing a Team Account is that it allows companies to have one Admin paying and as many users tethered to the account as you wish. You will also be able to take advantage of the most favorable volume discounts. Contact us for more info.

Is there an API I can integrate?

In a short, not quite yet. It’s early days here at Trint and we’re still working on optimizing our product.

Do you offer enterprise rates?

Yes — alongside our standard pricing structure we are able to offer enterprise rates. Contact us for more info.

I can’t seem to login / I’ve forgotten my password

If you’ve forgotten the password to your Trint account, you can reset it easily at any time here. Enter the email address associated with your account and you will be sent a confirmation email allowing you to reset your password.

How can I improve the level of accuracy?

Audio Quality

To get the most of Trint it is essential that you upload high quality audio. We think Trint can perform magic, but we can't perform miracles. Even though we use the world’s best automated speech-to-text algorithms, the accuracy of your transcripts depend on the quality of audio you give us.

That being the case ensure that your recordings are as clean as possible. That means maintaining a consistent recording environment, avoiding background noise and using high quality microphones. If your recording includes multiple speakers make sure that each of them speak directly into the microphone and avoid talking over one another.

Language Models

Although we constantly strive to improve our language models, Trint can struggle when faced with heavy accents or sporadic diction. We currently offer accent support in the following language models: British English, North American english, Australian English & European Spanish.

Trint Tip: If your audio/video file contains two or more accents to achieve best results select the language model of the weaker speaker.

What type of files does Trint support?

Trint supports a variety of audio and video files:

  • Recommended audio: .mp3, mp4, .m4a, .aac and .wav.
  • Recommended video: .mp4, .wma, .mov and .avi.

Why can’t I process my files? (insufficient credit)

When you signed up for an account we gave you 30 minutes of free credit to upload audio/video files of your interviews, lectures, speeches etc. If you haven’t upgraded to a subscription just yet and have used all your credit any files you attempt to upload will be locked. You can unlock these files by either:

  • Paying an individual unlock fee for the file
  • Signing up for a subscription plan

You can find more info on pricing plans here.

How can I export My Trints? (File type)

Exporting your edits on Trint is easy. Simply open the file in the editor, click on the green export button in the top right hand corner and select either a) entire document b) just highlights depending on the selection of text you need. You can then choose the relevant format (word document, SubRip format, VTT format or Interactive Transcript) and the export will appear in your downloads.

How secure are my Trints? Who has access?

We take security extremely seriously at Trint and go to great lengths to ensure that your content and data is protected. With this in mind no one can access your Trints unless you decide to actively share them. Were still in beta and in the process of attaining data security certification. If you have any specific questions regarding security please contact us or refer to our T&C’s.

How can I share my Trints with friends/colleagues?

Finished tidying up a transcript and need to send it over to a colleague? You can easily share your Trint by hitting the EMAIL icon in the top right hand side of the editor. This will send over a like for like copy of your transcript which can then be further worked on or exported into one of many formats. N.B. In order to access your Trint your colleagues will need to register for an account - they can do this here.

Which browser does Trint work best on?

Trint works best on Chrome. However be sure to disable any 3rd party extensions such as pop-up blockers which can reduce Trint’s overall functionality.

How to improve accuracy Back to Top

Audio Quality

Better audio means better transcription. Low quality audio or excessive background noise may reduce the quality of your transcripts. Here’s how to get the best audio:

  • Make sure you speak directly into the microphone
  • Choose a quiet place. Background noise (traffic, music, echo/ reverb) spoils the audio quality
  • Be aware of accents. Although Trint has many language models it may struggle to understand strong accents

Trint Tip

If you’re recording a meeting place your mobile phone or digital recorder on a flat surface in a quiet room. Make sure people don’t speak over one another. To guarantee best results the microphone should not be placed more than two to three feet away from the individual speaking.

Accent Selection

Trint offers language models for British English, North American English, Australian English, European Spanish & French. Selecting the relevant accent that best fits the speaker in your recording will greatly improve the level of accuracy. The accent can be selected in either:

  • The settings page:

    Accent Selection
  • Or during the upload process:

    Accent Selection

Trint Tip

If you have a recording that includes two or more accents (e.g. British English & North American English), select the accent of the weaker speaker to ensure best results.

Using the editor Back to Top

Trint allows you to edit transcripts in a simple, effortless way. Use the Editor just like you would use any word processor (Microsoft Word or Google Docs). You’ll find Trint’s intuitive tools will enable you to seamlessly edit both video and text on the fly.

Keyboard shortcuts Back to Top

We made some keyboard shortcuts to save you time while using the Trint Editor:

Shortcut Function
CTRL + Space Play / Pause
CTRL + R Rewind 5 seconds
CTRL + H Highlight
CTRL + Z Undo
CTRL + Shift + Z Redo

Why can’t you control play and pause with your space bar?

The Trint Editor is a combination of a text editor and a media player. In a text editor the space bar is used to create a space. In a media player the space is used to play and pause audio and video. Most people use Trint to quickly edit the text of their transcripts to perfect. In short, the text editor won!

SubRip (SubRip) Back to Top

SRT (SubRip text file format) is a UTF-8 text format that is readable by most desktop and media centre video player software. When it’s loaded with the associated video or audio file it will display subtitles or captions over the top.

SRT is represented by plain text so you can easily change the text or translate it manually in any basic text editor.

Your SRT file name must correspond to the video or audio file name and be placed in the same location. For example: myvideo.avi and would appear in the same folder.
